Weekend escape 1

1. Paddington Market

Paddington Market is a market which has 250 stalls selling a wide range of products, like fashion (womens, mens, kids) - jewellery (gold, silver, resin) - home wares, furniture and soft furnishings - art, craft - wood, iron and leather go ods - baby products - beauty and health products - photography. Also there is a range of food and an area to relax and eat or drink coffee while watching the bustle of the markets.

Paddington showcases the very best of Australian contemporary art, craft and fashion, directly by the artists and craft makers themselves. Paddington Markets is Sydney's creative cutting edge. Emerging design, art and fashion students compete for an opportunity to launch their name on the Sydney art, design and fashion scenes.

In the open-air, the market is situated in the grounds of the heritage-listed sandstone Paddington Uniting Church amidst the Victorian terraces and modern art galleries of Paddington. The Market is an integral part of the famous Oxford Street shopping strip. Oxford Street is regarded as the epicentre of Sydney chic and cool, drawing the famous and infamous, including the Entertainment Quarter (formerly known as Fox Studios) glitterati, all enjoying the dynamic atmosphere that is uniquely "Saturday in Paddington".

The market is: a haven for last minute gifts; a new experience every time: a discovery of novel concepts and new designs: a meeting place for coffee and exotic café fare; where to find one-off special gifts and new fashions before they hit the boutiques; and where locals and travellers mingle with Sydney artists.Paddington Markets is a must do in Sydney (Quote www.paddingtonmarkets.com.au)hahhah

2. Coogee Beach

The name Coogee is said to be taken from a local Aboriginal word koojah which means "smelly place"[4], or "stinking seaweed", a reference to the smell of decaying kelp washed up on the beach. Although at certain times large quantities of seaweed are still washed up, it is usually removed before it gets a chance to stink. Coastal winds can carry the stench to surrounding suburbs and as far westwards as the University of New South Wales.

Early visitors to the area, from the 1820s onwards, were never able to confirm exactly what "Coogee" meant, or if it in fact related to Coogee Beach. Another name, "Bobroi", was also recalled as the indigenous name for the locality.[5]

Some evidence suggests that the word "Coogee" may in fact be the original Aboriginal place name for the next bay to the north, now known as Gordon's Bay. [6]

The Aboriginal population had largely relocated by the mid-19th century after being decimated by disease and violent clashes with early settlers, though some Aborigines still live in the area today (Quote Wikipedia)
